A national securities exchange or market are the primary places where securities are traded in the United States The 2 most commonly referred to are the NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange And then they have various tiers within them It's important to distinguish a national securities exchange from a market which is does not have that designation such as the over-the-counter market There are certain advantages to being on a national securities exchange that are tied to exemptions within the securities laws of the US So it's always advantageous for a company if possible when it goes public to trade on a national securities exchange as opposed to a market
